Question by Silas G: Where is that “pay no income tax” statistic coming from?
Is it including the federal, state, social security, and medicare taxes that come out of most people’s paychecks before they even see them?

If not, why not, and if so, how the heck are they doing it? My refund, in years when I’m not paying in, is WAY less than what gets taken out of my paychecks every year before I see it.

It’s a number that folks like to trot out to “prove” that the working poor do not pay taxes. Of course, it does not take into account that the Federal Income tax is but a small portion of our tax structure…

Personally, I think it’s a travesty that American workers are so poorly paid that 47% do not make enough in wages to have to pay income taxes on it…
